Candidate Visit. Not too late. Read about the hiring process. New Home Bible Study.

Dear CCC Family,

John Price, a candidate for Associate Minister, is in town. It is not too late to attend the Saturday morning breakfast gathering to get to know him. You can attend the one Sunday after church too, but the Saturday one will be smaller and allow more time for personal interaction. The time and location is listed below.

In hiring an associate minister there are several important characteristics we are looking for. Let me briefly list a few.

  1. A thriving personal relationship with Jesus.
  2. Beliefs in the line with our church’s beliefs and practices.
  3. Godly character reflecting the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
  4. A loving and warm personality.
  5. A humble teachable spirit.
  6. A team player.
  7. A clear communicator.
  8. A leader.
  9. A person who enjoys living in a large city and serving in a diverse church.
  10. A healthy and supportive family.

We have listed our opening at several Christian colleges that are in line with the beliefs and practices of our church. We have had many people express interest. The elders have gone through a process of evaluating those people. The candidates answered questionaries and responded to statements about our beliefs, practices, history, and philosophy.  It was gradually narrowed down to a few. Their references were contacted. Based on what the references said we narrowed it down even more. Those still being considered were interviewed first by me and then by the elders. John Price has gone through all of that and we think he is a great candidate so we have  brought him and Heather, his wife, to New York to visit us this weekend.

Although the person is being hired with the intention that he will become the lead minister at some point in the future that is not automatic. A few years from now, as God leads, a time table for my departure will be established. At that point we will decide whether the associate minister will indeed take my place or not. If the elders and the associate minister believe that is the right decision, it will be presented to the congregation and affirmed by a vote of the congregation.

We think it is important that the person taking my place is not only a person of character and skill, but fits our congregation and our community. Having that person serve as an associate first will make that more likely. The date for my departure has not been set. It could be a few years or many. Regardless of how long that is, our church needs an associate minister to expand our church’s ministry now and we need to prepare for a smooth transition in the future.

Our church bylaws have the elders deciding to hire all staff other than the lead minister. The lead minister is voted on by the congregation. There will not be a vote on hiring the associate minister, but there will be for that person to become the lead minister. Still, your input is very important in the hiring of the associate minister which is why candidates will come for a visit and you will have the opportunity to interact with them. Those opportunities are listed below. Please take advantage of them and give the elders your thoughts. We are not a perfect church and none of the candidates will be perfect. God has one that is the right fit for us. Please pray that God guides us to that person.

See you Sunday!

Jeff

PS Look for the announcement about a special Verse of Day in your program on Sunday.
